Job Description Responsible for establishing and implementing educational
programs to be launched in the 2027 academic year. The applicant is expected to teach approximately five physics courses per year (each course runs for half a year). Candidates of the courses include common courses for science and engineering 2nd year undergraduate ( “quantum theory”, “statistical physics”, “relativity”) , courses for physics 3rd/4th year undergraduate ( “mathematical physics”, “electromagnetism”,” quantum mechanics”, “statistical mechanics”, “fluid dynamics”, “elasticity echanics”), and specialized courses in physics, astrophysics, or geophysics (depending on the specialty, physics: “particle and nuclear physics”, “condensed matter physics”, geophysics: “solid earth physics”, “atmospheric and oceanic physics”, “planetary and space physics”, astronomy: “astronomy”, “astrophysics”). Approximately half of the effort will be devoted to conducting one’s own research in one of the epartments. It is possible to apply for research funding and may supervise graduate students (subject to coordination with the affiliated department).
Term Either as a five-year term or as a tenured position, depending on the candidate’s prior academic achievements and professional experience. The retirement age in Tohoku university is 65. Subject to performance and institutional evaluation by the end of the fourth year, candidates appointed on a fixed-term basis may become eligible for transition to a tenured position upon demonstrating ignificant contributions to the university’s educational programs.
Salary
  • (1) the annual salary will be based on the salary regulations of Tohoku University, in accordance with the staff salary regulations, not exceeding 9.57 million yen. As a guideline, for an associate professor with 5 years of research and teaching experience after obtaining a doctoral degree, the salary is approximately 8.2 million yen.
  • commuting allowance and single-person relocation allowance may be provided.
  • (3) enrollment in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Aid Association, Employment Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
Starting date April 1, 2026
Working hours Exempt employee (7 hours and 45 minutes of work per day is assumed)
Holidays Saturdays, Sundays, annual paid leave, special leave, public holidays, and New Year’s holidays (December 29 to January 3 of the following year)
Probationary period Six months from the date of employment
Qualifications
  • (1) Educational background: Doctorate degree or expected to obtain one by the time of appointment.
  • (2) Other: Ability to teach undergraduate courses in physics in English. Japanese language skills are not required, but being able to engage in basic daily conversations would be evaluated positively.
