International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS) Program

Last Update:2010-09-30

In October 2004, Graduate School of Science at Tohoku University started a new program, International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS), the first international graduate program founded in the Japanese national universities. The IGPAS is conducted in English for international students who are eager to obtain Master's and Doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Science at Tohoku University.

The IGPAS is basically a five-year program. This program consists of the 1-2 year Master's program followed by the 2-3 year Doctoral program. The program covers specially planned three areas:
(1) Chemistry and Biochemistry Program,
(2) Multi-scale Natural Science Program, and
(3) Earth and Planetary Science Program.
These programs are designed interdisciplinary so that students do not have to specialize in a specific area and they can learn from a variety of fields in science. Another aim of this program is to educate Japanese students to exert their abilities internationally as professional scientists.

The academic year of the graduate program starts in October, 2011. The number of students in each Master's and Doctoral program is limited to twenty in each program. Applicants who have completed Master's degree in their colleges or universities may select either the Master's program or the Doctoral program. However, applicants who are selected for the scholarship from the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) must take both the Master's program and the Doctoral program.
